Lucy McWhirter: Culinary and Creative Harmony
By Emma Ritson
In the vibrant borough of Hackney, amidst the eclectic fusion of cultures and creativity that define East London, Lucy McWhirter stands as a beacon of innovation and artistic flair. As the Creative Director of Popham's Bakery, Lucy not only helps orchestrate the delectable symphony of baked goods that grace the tables of Hackney residents but also weaves her creative magic into a unique line of homewares that capture the essence of the local area.
At the helm of the bakery cafe—with branches in Victoria Park, Hackney and Islington—McWhirter has elevated the humble bakery experience into a multisensory journey. Her passion for design and commitment to quality craftsmanship extend beyond the kitchen, manifesting in a thoughtfully curated collection of homewares and tableware that reflect the spirit of Hackney.
Lucy's journey into the world of homewares began as an extension of her dedication to serving Popham’s food and drinks on beautiful servingware. Eager guests wanted to know where they could get such beautiful peices for their own homes. The result is Pophams Home. These goods, ranging from artisanal ceramics to handcrafted textiles, serve as a testament to Lucy's keen eye for detail and her ability to seamlessly blend culinary and artistic elements.
Inspired by the diverse and culturally rich tapestry of Hackney, McWirther has sought to encapsulate the essence of the local area in tangible, everyday objects. The result is a collection that marries functionality with aesthetics, allowing residents to bring artisanal goods into their homes.
And then there is the interiors of the cafes.
Transformed from a former fashion stylist's studio, the Victoria Park cafe underwent a meticulous redesign courtesy of the architectural and interior design prowess of Nothing Is Not Nothing. The sizable window, adorned with sleek timber framing, commands attention as a striking focal point visible both from the exterior and within, infusing the space with a radiant, ethereal glow. The understated palette, characterized by its timeless aesthetics, imparts a serene atmosphere. Walls, thoughtfully designed to effortlessly disperse shadow and light, are adorned with Bauwerk Colour limewash paint, imparting a subtly textured appearance that enhances the overall ambiance.
Within the carefully curated confines of the brand, a selection of meticulously chosen interior pieces crafted by artisans find a fitting home. McWhirter's creative ingenuity takes centre stage in the pendant lights that gracefully illuminate the counter. Commissioning potter Lucia Ocejo, Lucy envisioned and brought to life the terracotta sculptures. The bench seating is adorned with the distinctive 'Laugh and Hail' design, a creation of textile artist Louisa Loakes, showcased on hand-printed cushions.
Staying true to the signature Pophams' aesthetic, the bakery showcases site-specific tableware masterfully crafted by Kimberly Chan of San San Ceramics. This bespoke collection includes cups tailored for cortados, flat whites, and lattes, as well as pastry plates and milk jugs, each boasting a matte exterior and gloss-glazed interiors. Kimberly's Victoria Park designs seamlessly integrate into the broader tableau of ceramics conceived for the Islington and London Fields branches by Jess Jos and Skye Corewijn.
Beyond the tangible products, Lucy McWhirter's commitment to the local area extends to her role as a community advocate. Recognizing the importance of sustainability, she has initiated partnerships with local makers and suppliers, ensuring that her homeware collection is not only aesthetically pleasing but also ethically sourced. This approach not only supports the local economy but also aligns with the broader ethos of Popham's Bakery as a community-centric establishment.

Her homeware collection is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of culinary and creative worlds, providing a tangible expression of the diverse and dynamic spirit that defines Hackney.
