How to Transform Your Rental into a Residence
By Emma Ritson
Upgrading the interior of a rental can be a daunting task, especially when faced with restrictions that come with rental agreements; that’s not to mention the bland fixtures and grey zones that commercial landlords favour.
Thankfully, transforming your space to reflect your style doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. We explored some of the easiest interior upgrades that you can make to a rental, with insights from slow living interior designer Mischa Reeves.
Rearrange Your Furniture
One of the simplest ways to refresh a room is to rearrange the furniture. “Repositioning furniture can dramatically change the look and feel of a space,” says Reeves. “It allows you to see your environment from a new perspective without spending a dime.” Experiment with different layouts to find what works best for your space, considering both aesthetics and functionality.
We recommend low arm chairs in a more stylised design to create defined spaces in smaller areas. Ottomans and poufs also work well.
Temporary Wallpaper and Decals
Temporary wallpaper and wall decals are renter-friendly options that allow for significant visual impact without permanent changes. Available in a wide array of patterns and colors, these products can easily be applied and removed without damaging walls. Reeves notes, “These solutions are perfect for adding personality and warmth to a space, particularly in areas like the living room or bedroom.”

Lighting
Updating lighting can instantly enhance the ambiance of a room. Swap out generic light fixtures for stylish, statement pieces or add floor lamps and table lamps to create a cozy atmosphere. “Lighting is crucial in setting the mood,” explains Reeves. “Choose warm, soft lighting to create a relaxing environment. Don’t forget that lighting can also be a design element on its own.”
Textiles and Soft Furnishings
Incorporating new textiles such as curtains, rugs, and throw pillows can make a significant difference to your home. These items are easy to change and can be matched to your personal style. “Opt for natural fibers and neutral tones for a timeless, elegant look,” suggests Reeves. “Layering different textures can add depth and interest to your decor.”

Artwork and Wall Decor
Personalising your walls with artwork, photos, or mirrors is a great way to make a rental feel like home. Use removable hooks or adhesive strips to hang pieces without causing damage. Reeves recommends creating a gallery wall: “A collection of your favorite pieces can make a strong visual statement and is easily adjustable.”
If you don’t have any art work check out your local art school for well-priced paintings. Etsy is another good place to look.
Plants and Greenery
Adding plants is one of the easiest ways to breathe life into a rental. Plants not only improve air quality but also add a touch of nature and serenity. “Choose low-maintenance plants like succulents or snake plants if you’re new to gardening,” advises Reeves. “Plants can soften harsh lines and bring a sense of tranquility to your space.”
Ask your friends for offcuts from their plants and save money.
Hardware Upgrades
Swapping out hardware such as cabinet handles and drawer pulls can refresh the look of kitchens and bathrooms and significantly update your interiors. Remember to keep the original hardware to reinstall before moving out. “It’s a small change that can make a big difference,” Reeves points out. “Look for unique or vintage pieces to add character.”
Shelving and Storage Solutions
Freestanding shelving units or stylish storage solutions can help keep your rental organized and clutter-free, whilst screw in shelves help to define spaces in larger rooms. Shelving also provides plenty of opportunities to display decorative items and personal collections. “Practical yet decorative, these additions can enhance both functionality and aesthetics,” Reeves explains.

Window Treatments
Changing window treatments is a straightforward way to control light and add style. Replace standard blinds with curtains or drapes that reflect your taste. “Curtains can add a layer of luxury and softness,” notes Reeves. “Opt for materials that complement your overall decor.”
Well-priced blinds from Argos can update a room, especially when the old blinds are grubby.
“Making a rental your own doesn’t have to involve major renovations,” Reeves says. “Simple, thoughtful changes can create a space that feels uniquely yours while respecting the boundaries of your lease.” By focusing on these renter-friendly improvements, you can enjoy a beautiful and personalized living space without the stress of permanent alterations.
