Living Between the Known and the Mystical: Beata Heuman's Style
By Emma Ritson
In the realm of interior design, few names resonate as powerfully as Beata Hueman's. Her innovative approach to creating elevated living spaces is nothing short of transformative. Through all her projects, she offers a mesmerising blend of modern and classic elements, something she pulls off with effortlessness, daring and clarity. Heuman has described her approach as a mix of ‘restraint and exuberance’ and it’s this contrast that has caught the imagination of many.
Heuman’s elevated style—apparently once removed from reality—shows us we can live between the known and the unknown. In accordance to this new law, her design treads that fine line between mysticism, story and reality—and it’s this that has enchanted so many.
In her 2021 book, Every Room Should Sing, Beata called out for more authentic and individual design. “Your surroundings affect you consciously and unconsciously, and we should all aspire to construct a home environment that helps us to be the person we want to be. An interior can enrich your life, and can even open your mind to certain ideas. You need to seek the right combination of whatever matters to you.”
Undoubtedly, there's much we can learn from Heuman’s distinctive homely-meets-operatic style. An infusion of whimsy into a stately space? Why not? A vintage knickknack next to a modern masterpiece? Go ahead. She reminds us that we too can enhance our own dwellings and infuse our homes with the same timeless elegance—no matter our budget.
An assured resume
Since arriving to London and gradating from Nicky Haslam’s studio, Heuman has catapulted into the pubic eye. Hotels, restaurants, homes—she’s done it all. Recently she’s worked on celebrity homes and international hotels, as well as opening her new retail space at 188 Hammermith Road.
At Paris’ Hôtel de La Boétie, rich colours combine with classic shapes in sumptuous layers that hint at various eras and influences. Heuman reimagined the Parisian hotel’s interiors whilst holding onto existing elements of the building. Here is the vintage reception sign, homely and eye-catching, elevated with a palette of fresh colours that awaken the spirit. There is a homespun light shade, sitting at a contrast to the Hausmann details.
“The astounding now sits check-by-jowl with timeless allure. It’s invigorating, classic and cool.”
One of Heuman's notable projects is the vibrant and comfortable Victorian-era home of Adwoa Aboah featured in Architectural Digest. The harmonious blend of modern and classic elements in the Victorian home is arresting—and yet the space is clearly a sanctuary in a bustling city. By combining contemporary pieces with timeless classics, the astounding now sits check-by-jowl with timeless allure. It’s invigorating, classic and cool.
